If you're wondering how to make tasty BBQ ribs without a grill or a smoker, cooking ribs in the oven is the tastiest place to start. They're really good! Not only are these ribs smoky, sticky, and just a little bit sweet, they're fall-off-the-bone delicious and take less than 10 minutes to prep before baking low and slow in the oven.

Why You'll Love This Oven-Baked BBQ Ribs Recipe

    • It takes less than 10 minutes to get the ribs prepped and into the oven
    • You don't need a grill or a smoker to make these BBQ ribs
    • The rib meat is so tender, and juicy it literally falls off the bone
    • Perfectly smoky and all-natural just-barbecued flavor without using Liquid Smoke
    • You can enjoy these ribs year-round even when it's wet and freezing outside
    • Use the leftover bones for making ramen stock or pork bone broth
    • The meat freezes extremely well and makes easy BBQ dinners (pork sandwiches, tacos, quesadillas, etc.)

Two Fool-Proof Tips For Making Tender Ribs

When baking or braising BBQ ribs in the oven, there are two fool-proof methods for getting the most tender ribs.

    • Cook the meat completely covered in a sealed foil pouch or in a dutch oven. This method of baking ribs allows for all of the steam that's created inside the pouch (or dutch oven) to fall back onto the meat as it cooks. Not only does this method infuse more flavor into the pork, but it keeps the meat fall-off-the-bone tender.
    • Cook the ribs at a low temperature for a long time.  Most often tender oven-baked ribs cook at temperatures somewhere between 275°F to 325°F (135°C to 160°F) for a period of 2 to 3 hours.

How To Make BBQ Ribs Without a Grill

Not everyone has a backyard or a grill. Which makes baking ribs in the oven a great alternative to grilling or smoking ribs outdoors. For this recipe, I use an easy DIY spice rub to fully flavor the meat with just the right amount of natural smoky flavor. The ribs cook low and slow for 2 ½ to 3 hours until the meat is falling off the bones.

And finally, they're slathered with a sweet and spicy BBQ sauce before caramelizing under the broiler for a few minutes which gives them their signature faux "bark" (that crispy sticky "crust" that adds even more flavor and "just-grilled" texture).

Remove the Membrane From Pork Ribs Before Cooking Them

If you're cooking a rack of ribs (like baby back ribs or St. Louis-style ribs) you may notice a shiny tough membrane on the backside. You need to remove this membrane before cooking because otherwise, it becomes really tough and chewy. It also allows the spice rub or any other seasonings you're using to have better contact with (and penetrate) the meat rendering it more tender and flavorful.

To easily remove the membrane from a rack of ribs, use your fingers or a sharp pointed object like a metal skewer or knife to get under the membrane and pull it up. Once you have a big enough piece you can grab onto, use a paper towel to grab it and pull it off completely.

    Easy Oven-Baked Barbecue Ribs Ingredients

Making smoky BBQ ribs in the oven doesn't require using Liquid Smoke. Instead, all you really need is a quick homemade spice rub which adds just the right amount of smoky flavor without overwhelming the pork. It's super easy to make and tastes great on everything from grilled chicken to tofu, and even beef.

How to Make Easy Oven-Baked BBQ Ribs

It's easier than ever to make really delicious tender barbecue ribs right in your own home oven. This recipe is not trying to replace your favorite local BBQ joint's ribs. It's just a great way to get your BBQ fix anytime you want for at least half the price especially if you don't own a grill.

Step 1. Preheat the oven to 325°F/160°C & season the ribs. While the oven is preheating, lay out a large piece of aluminum foil and add the ribs. Using a pastry brush, add a thin coating of mustard to all sides of the meat (this helps the dry rub stick better to the pork).

Step 2. Bake the ribs. Next, sprinkle the ribs all over with the spice rub being sure to rub and press it into the meat as you go. Once the ribs are fully coated, seal them up and cook them or let them rest at room temperature for 1 hour to allow the seasonings to penetrate the meat. *I typically bake them right away.

closeup of ribs covered with spice rub

Step 3. Bake the ribs. Cover the ribs completely with foil and seal the edges to create a pouch and bake them for 2 ½ to 3 hours or until fork tender and juicy. Remove them from the oven and carefully peel back the foil using a pair of tongs and turn on the oven broiler function to 450°F/230°C. Turn the ribs over in their juices to baste and coat them well.

Then (if desired) remove them to another baking tray lined with aluminum foil and slather them with BBQ sauce coating them completely. Place them under the preheated broiler for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the BBQ sauce starts to caramelize and form a crispy "bark" and the tops of the ribs are visibly sticky. Remove them from the oven and serve, Enjoy!

Why You Shouldn't Par-Boil Ribs Before Oven-Baking, Braising, or Grilling Them

Like many people, I grew up with the occasional ribs being par-boiled in a mixture of water and BBQ sauce which was done for two reasons -- They cooked faster once they were on the grill (or oven) and they retained moisture. But, par-boiling meat also draws out its delicious flavor.

Think of how you make a meat stock or broth -- all the flavors in the meat and bones are extracted into the water, producing a great-tasting liquid and lackluster meat. Braising or oven-baking ribs are both ideal ways to keep moisture and flavor right where you want it -- in the meat itself. Skip the par-boiling to eat better ribs.

How Long to Cook Ribs in the Oven(Best Times & Temperatures for Tender Ribs)

You may be wondering how long it takes to cook oven-baked BBQ ribs. The answer is, several different times and temps will work well depending on how much or how little time you have.

Below are common times and temperatures for cooking ribs in the oven that all result in tender ribs.

    • Bake ribs at 250°F/120°C for 3 to 4 hours
    • Bake ribs at 275°F/135°C for 3 to 3 ½ hours
    • Bake ribs at 300°F/150°C for 2 ½ to 3 hours
    • Bake ribs at 325°F/160°C for 2 to 3 hours
    • Bake ribs at 350°F/1176°C for just about 2 hours
